Description
With a tattoo of Bay Area legend Mac Dre on his wrist, rapper and producer Paulo Rodriguez, aka P-Lo, is one of his region’s proudest supporters. P-Lo grew up in Pinole alongside fellow rapper-producer IAMSU!, so it was hardly surprising that the two rap devotees followed in the footsteps of their Bay heroes – E-40, Keak Da Sneak, Too $hort and of course Mac Dre – rapping on their own beats, producing under the moniker The Invasion and kicking off their own collective, The Heartbreak Gang or The HBK Gang for short.
Since 2011, HBK has picked up plenty of members and associates, including Sage the Gemini, Jay Ant, Kool John and Khelani, and their sound has remained consistently on the Bay’s cutting edge. P-Lo and IAMSU!’s unmistakable productions have been the backbone of HBK’s success, and his FACT mix lays that out pretty plainly as he paints a vivid picture of the scene, dropping plenty of self-produced heaters and a slew of his own tracks.
It’s a diverse picture of how the Bay’s influence has changed the sound of contemporary US pop since the glory days of hyphy in the last ’90s and early ’00s, and shows the the new wave of stars – from Nef The Pharaoh to G-Eazy – sound at home alongside old heads E-40, Keak Da Sneak and Turf Talk.
