As you likely already know, RA has plenty of writers with plenty of opinions. That’s why we started Critics Roundtable, a regular Exchange podcast in which we sit down with some of the site’s contributors—and some guest experts—to talk about electronic music. In our latest edition, we tackle three topics. First up, artist visas. Australian-born DJ/producer Deepchild joined us to talk us through his recent run-in at the Canadian border as well as the various challenges that DJs and promoters face when they choose to put on shows with international guests.
Next, we delve into the debate about “pressing play.” Deadmau5 recently called out himself and fellow producers for doing that—and not much more—in their performances. We welcomed Jim Mazur of Native Instruments and Peter Kirn of Create Digital Music to chat about the technology behind live sets to gain a better understanding of what’s happening onstage. Finally, the three critics roundtable participants—Todd L. Burns, Will Lynch and Philip Sherburne—tackle GEMA. It was announced earlier this summer that the German collections agency would raise the tariff on clubs throughout the country to such an amount that famed venues like Berghain, Watergate and Weekend would likely have to shut their doors if it came to pass. We sift through the situation to separate myth and reality on this incredibly hot topic in the club scene in Berlin.
Thanks to Manmade Mastering in Berlin for the use of their studio.
